So many of my friends say things to me like ‘’Oh I couldn’t do what you do, I couldn’t take the pressure!’’. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not as easy as just ‘doing some hair and putting on some make up’ but after 7 years turning up to transform a bride on the biggest day of her life, well…. it's second nature to me now but believe me when I say that wasn’t always the case! When I first became a bridal stylist, it was kind of an accident. A client of mine simply asked if I did bridal hair and I replied confidently ‘Yeah of course, No problem!’. Truth is I’d never styled an actual bride before. I knew I loved hair up, I knew I enjoyed creating hair styles but did I actually know if I could do that for a bride?! I had no idea but I knew there was only one way to find out!
That first wedding morning was such a buzz. As I packed my tools ready to leave as she headed off to her ceremony something inside me had stirred. This was what I wanted to do. I needed to make this happen. That morning I completed hair for the bride, all four of her bridesmaids and mum too. I paid attention to the details they all gave me, ‘’I don’t like my ears’’ or ‘’I don’t want it too tight’’ and by the time 2pm came I had 6 very happy and wedding ready ladies! Since that day I’ve styled over 350 brides, over a thousand bridesmaids and lots of Mums, Nans and wedding guests. I’ve gone from offering hair services, to offering make up too. I've become a trainer for Airbase make up, something I offer to all my brides, and I’ve gained my qualifications to teach so that I can share my love for my industry with others aswell. I’ve attended training classes to further my own knowledge and I’ve learnt from some of the best stylists in the world. Thats my favourite thing about this industry, its always changing. You will never know everything there is to know. Half of the fun for me is mastering the latest style, or learning a new technique.
The wedding industry is such a great place to work in, its fast paced and always moving. Trends change year on year and no two weddings are the same. Every bridal hair and make up look I create is bespoke to that particular bride. Thats why a consultation is so important. At the preview session, which is when I meet the bride to create her hair and make up look for he first time, we spend time talking about what type of wedding she’s having. It’s important that my work match her ideas perfectly. I want to know about colours, about her dress, about her venue - everything plays a part in me really understanding her needs. I ask that she bring pictures of things she likes, and even things she doesn’t, so I am able to get a really good idea about exactly what it is that she really wants so I can do my best to deliver on that. So many brides spend so much time and money on every little detail of their day, they want it to be perfect and they want it to reflect them and the person they are marrying. Their hair and make up look should be the same, I want my brides to know that I care enough to give their wedding the time and attention that they too have given to it. It’s not just ‘another’ wedding. Whether it’s my first wedding or my 400th wedding, I really do believe that every bride should be made to feel like their wedding is my only wedding. Thats why I like to make sure that when a bride books me she knows that I’ll be with her right until the last moment, making sure everything is perfect, that the final piece of hair is in place and that her lipstick is perfect as she heads off down the aisle. Lots of brides will tell me ‘’I love this but my hair is so thin/short/curly/frizzy that I don’t think I can have it.’’ But thats where she’s wrong… As far as I’m concerned its my job to bring her bridal vision to life. Using my knowledge of products, experience with all hair and skin types and textures and a little bit of creativity, a bride really can have whatever she wants. Whether I need to add extensions, discuss colour placement, use a specific product or tool, I try to explain to my brides that nothing is beyond the realms of possibility when it comes to their wedding day. It’s not their job to settle for something because they think it’s all they can manage, Instead it’s my job to find a way to give them the look they want in a way thats possible for them. Over the years I’ve had so many creations that I’m proud of. On a wedding morning, as I see a woman transform into a bride in front of my eyes it’s like a magic happens. The moment they step into their dress, look into the mirror and see a bride staring back at them is really something special. So many ladies comment that they’ve never seen themselves look so beautiful. My job is to make people look beautiful but even better than that is to know that someone really feels beautiful. I’m not just giving them a hair style and a make up look, I’m giving them confidence to hold their head high as they walk down the aisle and into their new life as a Mrs! I’ve created everything from vintage glam to boho chic ( and everything in between! ). My portfolio contains an array of styles and looks so whether a bride is wanting a bold red lip for her 20’s theme soiree or flowers in her hair for her back garden extraordinaire then I know I have it covered! I’ve attached a couple of pictures below that show the diversity of my brides and as I mentioned before , everything is unique to them. I love working with a bride who looks in the mirror with a smile on her face and says ‘I didn’t know that I could look like this!' My top tips for a bride is to do your research. research your hair and make up look, but research your chosen artist also. There are so many great, talented people in our industry but it’s important that a bride makes an educated choice as to who they want too join them on their day. They’re not just inviting someone to do their hair and make up, they're inviting someone to spend their entire wedding morning with them and thats an event in itself! With social media nowadays it’s much easier to get a ‘feel’ for your chosen artist. You can see their work, decide that you like it and you can get inspired by them. I firmly believe that it’s about finding the artist that you know will deliver for you on your wedding morning, not just about who’s the cheapest or who’s available. That being said lots of popular artists get booked up to 2 years in advance so when you find the person you like make sure you secure your booking- the earlier the better! Many artists, like myself, only commit to one bride per day. This means that I can be with you exactly when you need me. I won’t leave two hours before your ceremony because I have another client, and I won’t rush you or make you get ready at 5am just because it fits my schedule. I’m proud of the work I create and I want to ensure that you are looking 100% perfect as you head down the aisle…both my reputation and your photos depend on it!
