Bedfordshire Cake Makers Shares Tips and Tricks on Choosing your Cake Design

Updated: May 11

Why I do what I do?

I LOVE to take someone’s ideas and turn them into an edible piece of art!

I have always had a keen interest in baking as my Mom has baked all her life for friends and family however, prior to baking full time I worked in a print design studio for around 2 1/2 years and it wasn’t until I was 22 that I decided to go full time with my cake baking/decorating and make a career out of it! I really enjoy meeting my clients & working together with them on their ideas to create a cake for their special day, whether that be a wedding day or a special occasion. I have always been a creative person and I do try to in- corporate my previous experience in print design into my work to create something different and special!

What you love most about the industry?

I love that there are so many other cake artist and bakers out there to learn from! My

favourite thing to do is to flick through instagram and learn tips and tricks from other cake makers. I do also love being able to be apart of someone’s special day!

Favourite creation?

My favourite creation to date is a wedding cake which was inspired by a Lucy Tiffany print. The cake was a 2 tier fondant covered cake with a bold black base tier which was then hand painted with buttercream to reflect the Lucy TIffany print! The top tier was an ivory covered tier with a gold painted top rim. The cake was then topped with gold dinosaur toppers, which the bride and groom provided! I loved how this cake turned out and how the bride was very much looking for something different and aloud me to do my own style. The concept behind the cake was to reflect the wallpaper by Lucy which was at the wedding reception venue in London and I think it turned out brilliantly! Most importantly the bride & groomed loved the cake! P.S the wedding along with my cake will be featured in Your London wedding magazine next march/April wooo!

Choosing a Theme.

Most of the time clients come to me with ideas for a theme and I come up with a design based on what they like but I always try and but my own style to all of my cakes and bakes! I love when clients come to me with an open brief or even better use one of my previous cakes for inspiration. The most important thing for me is to create something which the client is happy with but also has my own spin on it.

If the customer is struggling with a theme I like to ask them about favourite colours, things like and don’t like, patterns they like or if they have pictures of anything ( doesn’t have to be cake related) that I could use for inspiration.

Any tips you want to share?

Don’t be afraid to follow your own style and do your own thing! If people like your style they will choose you, don’t compare yourself to others!
