5 Honeymoons Destinations - Suitcase Travel Bedfordshire

Updated: Jun 26

Today we have Penny from Suitcase Travel on the blog, talking everything honeymoons. Once you have had your special day you both need a well deserved honeymoon, whether it is straight after the wedding or a bit later on. However, choosing the destination is not necessarily that easy to do.

Penny is the honeymoon expert for Suitcase Travel, which is her family run independent travel agency based in Bedfordshire.

Now, lets get on with the blog...

The Maldives, Indian Ocean

The Maldives remains the number one destination for my honeymooners and to be fair it is easy to see why as each island is truly special. The islands all come with their own touch of luxury, gorgeous white sand beaches and the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean. When staying here, you really are in a bit of paradise. They can be perfect for those who love snorkelling, scuba diving, eating gourmet food or just to simple sit back and relax.

Many of the islands in the Maldives have overwater villas. These are amazing and if you are able to stay in them, I would definitely recommend to do so! To fit within their budget, some of my couples will stay in a beach villas for the first half of the honeymoon and then in an overwater villa for the second half. Doing this can save you quite a bit of money.

There are hundreds of islands to choose from that are all different so it can be a little overwhelming in choosing one. Luckily, a travel agent is the perfect person as once they know the things that are essential for you, they will be able to narrow it down and provide you with a couple of options. This my personal favourite part as I love to get to know my brides and grooms to make sure they have the best holiday possible.

Alternative destinations that you might also like to consider:

· Sandals Montego Bay, Jamaica staying in one of their overwater bungalows.

· The Seychelles, Indian Ocean

· Bora Bora, French Polynesia

St. Lucia, The Caribbean

The Caribbean makes a perfect honeymoon destination. Sun, sea and sand make a perfect combination plus the odd rum cocktail is an added bonus. St. Lucia is a great choice because there is more to this island than the beaches and so there is something to keep everyone happy.

Yes the beaches are gorgeous and the hotels are just as good with tasty food and sublime service making you feel like royalty whilst away. However, there is so much to see and do on the island as well. You can zipline in a rainforest, swim in waterfalls, see some turtles during their hatching season, enjoy the vibrant nightlife, snorkel in the clear waters amongst the colourful fish – the list is endless!

So if you want more than just the beach, St. Lucia is definitely worth a visit.

Alternative destinations that you might also like to consider:

· Antigua, the Caribbean

· Mauritius, Indian Ocean

· Barbados, the Caribbean

- Sandals Grande St. Lucian

Bali, Indonesia

The quality that you can get for the price that you pay when going to Bali is truly amazing. This is a key reason why it is a firm favourite amongst my honeymoon couples. There are some stunning hotels that you can stay at giving you breath-taking views and your own private pool. Perfect spots to unwind and spend some quality time together.

I would definitely recommend doing a twin-centre here. Three nights in the arty centre of Ubud with its cool markets and the best views around and the rest of your time by the beach in the resorts of Seminyak, Nusa Dua or Sanur depending on what you like most. Seminyak seems to be the place that suits our couples most so is the more popular choice but the others have a lot going for them too, so should not be dismissed. Again this is where a travel agent is great, as they can advise you on each spot to help make your decision on what is best for you. If you like the sound of it, doing a stop over in Singapore is a great choice as this vibrant city is something not to be missed.

Alternative destinations that you might also like to consider:

· Thailand – either just the beach or visit one or two other spots in the country beforehand

· Aruba, the Caribbean

· Vietnam – either just the beach in Hoi An or again one or two other spots in the country beforehand

- Viceroy Bali

West Coast of the U.S.A.

More of my couples are wanting to do more than just sit on the beach for their honeymoon and a popular choice for these is to drive along the west coast of the U.S.A. There is plenty to see and do along the coast line. A popular route is to start in the city like no other in the world, Las Vegas. After a few days in this mesmerising city, grab the car and drive along the coast visiting cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego, towns like Carmel and Monterey and enjoy the delights of the National Parks such as Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Yosemite.

The great thing about this type of honeymoon is that you can tailor it exactly how you want it. You can take as much time as you want in each stop depending on what you both like to do. Everyone is different and I never do exactly the same honeymoon. When arranging honeymoons like this in particular, travel agents are in their element as we are able to show our knowledge and experience on recommending places to stay and things to do based on your likes. The thing I always hear from couples is them apologising for being fussy and I always say don’t be as it is not any other holiday, it is something truly special that needs to be perfect.

Alternative destinations that you might also like to consider:

· Florida coastline self-drive, U.S.A.

· New York City and Las Vegas, U.S.A.

· Western Canada self-drive.

Santorini, Greece

You do not necessarily need to travel too far for a special and amazing honeymoon as there are some great spots in Europe that make a great honeymoon. The top choice in Europe amongst my customers is the island of Santorini in Greece. This picture perfect island is as beautiful as it looks in the photos and it has some of the best hotels that Greece has to offer with some incredible pools to relax by. If you are a bit of a foodie, then this island also has plenty of restaurants that you will love also without costing a small fortune to enjoy.

I always recommend staying near the top of the island as you get the best views going. Plus you are well away from the hustle and bustle of the tourists coming for the day from the cruise ships. Luckily, you can enjoy the hot spots in the evening when they have left the port or on the days when the cruises are not in port. Santorini, like all Greek islands, provides you a great opportunity to do a bit of island hopping between different islands. You can easily do this with the islands of Naxos and Mykonos if you like the idea of this.

Alternative destinations that you might also like to consider:

· Mykonos, Greece

· Skopelos, Greece

· The Amalfi Coast, Italy
